Texas Mesquite was sanded and hand scraped onsite to get a beautiful even feel. The treads on the stairs were made the same way so as to match perfectly.
Mesquite does stain well in a dark finish. It will always have a red undertone and some dark colors look better that others. Try something with a slight green undertone and it will help cancel some of the red out.
