It made sense to have a prep. sink at the island in addition to the main sink so that multiple people could prepare meals simultaneously. The microwave is under the counter for aesthetic reasons and because they
particular was designed specifically to allow for multiple experienced cooks to use it at once. To that end the cooktop was placed such that it could be accessed from both sides. In this case it drove the design however I think most kitchens are used by multiple people at one time so it is certainly work thinking
