bright open room with high ceilings
Wide, open, airy space. Open-beam ceiling. I love it all.
beam ceiling can be used as anchor for lighting
The open-beam design in this Delaware beach house kitchen is as good looking as it is utilitarian. It allows the sun to flood in from the upper window (with its flashy red shutters), and provides an anchoring spot for a trio of Circa nautical-look pendant lights.

Your work looks awesome. I've been hoping to remove a low drop - ceiling in my basement but I'm not sure how to plan lighting like this. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!
My basement has insulation in the ceiling...
drywalling the ceiling could be the better option for you.
I just caught the "little-used Living Room" comment. My area will be used. I might be better installing sheetrock or a drop-in ceiling.
Sorry for the slow response ... these are just can lights without the drywall ceiling. We just put
put all the electrical in and simply sprayed the housing and conduit white along with the ceiling.
Don't like the decorating but like the drywall. With ceilings

The ceiling looks fabulous! It also looks like it is difficult. How did you do it? Any tips? Thank you.
How tall is the ceiling? Thank you.
Does this ceiling treatment (no insulation) cause heating problems on the main level? Does sound travel up?
I have the same type of basement ceiling, but with insulation. I have been told that removing the insulation would increase
increase my heating bill and that sound would travel. Would like to have access to the ceiling, but don't want to put up an ugly looking metal frame with panels. Any suggestions
The ceiling is 7'-8" to the underside of the subfloor above and just over 7'-0 to the underside of the joists. By keeping the joists open you can achieve a more airy feel to the space even when you are limited by the existing conditions. Thanks for your inquiry.

What kind of lights do you put in the ceiling?
Can you please tell me what type of flooring was used in this basement? Were getting our ceilings painted (open look) but, undecided for flooring.
Exposed ceilings such as this are usually sprayed using a paint sprayer. Using a sprayer does require more paint but you will be done in no time and will have a more uniform look that you won't be able to achieve using a brush and roller.
painted ceiling vs. a drop ceiling.... cheaper and more open.

How did you paint the open ceiling? What kind of paint and is it sprayed on?
I see in your response to another question that all paint is Benjamin Moore. Have you been able to find the color name? Also, I assume the ceiling was sprayed, how many coats did it take?
how do you sound proof the exposed joist ceiling from top floor noises?
How did they control the appearance of wiring and cables in the ceiling?
and it's comfy (: and as for duct work I have the same problem, if your ceilings are too small to add a drop ceiling in the basement to hide it, they make at lowes a variety of options, where you just pin it straight to the ceiling, it doesn't take away from height, hides ductwork.
issue, we loved the exposed ceiling and would love to do the same in our basement. However, we have a workout room and electric drum set down there. Currently, we get almost no noise upstairs -- presumably due largely to the current drop ceiling. If we remove the ceiling tile, I'm concerned about how

Love the white wood ceilings and beams.
The joist is the horizontal beam of a truss; the rafters form the triangular peak. This open ceiling showcases typical truss construction.
Tied together. Soaring vaulted ceilings certainly help make this living/dining area feel light and bright, but I especially love how the timber-panelled far wall echoes the ceiling lines. A contrasting weathered timber frame around the built-in shelving helps
