Where does the fireplace chimney go? How high up is in past what we can see in the picture? Is this a covered structure behind the house?
This fireplace is a direct vent-- with no flue. Many gas-burning outdoor fireplaces are direct vent with no flue needed. The brick "chimney" is really just decorative, and ends into the underside of the ceiling you see in the picture. Above the ceiling is actually an extension of the second floor living

I painted with a off-white latex paint. they extend up the wall with a small mantel. I want to tile the lower section under the mantel and have a wonderful plate collection. Can the tiling and the plants be put in place over this paint (lightly sanded?) and would construction adhesive be a good choie
