I tend to be fussy about the light a fixture makes, versus looking for a fixture that makes an architectural or artistic statement. Avoid creating a runway effect by staggering light, setting some higher and some lower, placing some nearer and some farther from the path and/or softening the fixtures

side of drive with up lighting??
Hint at a destination and create mystery. Twists and turns, a hidden path, a tree-lined alley, a corner hidden by shrubs — these are places tailor made for independent thinking and exploring. Where does that path go? What’s over there

Simple. Easy to build. Permeable. Sustainable. Inexpensive. What’s not to love? This naturalistic mulch path, with 100 percent recycled content, is über-inviting. Strong geometry executed with relaxed materials provides the best of all worlds: a direct path between points

Would snow or rain have a negative effect on this material, or on decomposed granite, on Long Island, New York ? Thanks.
Will rain or snow have a negative effect on a dg patio
this pathway. It looks like you've put in a line of metal edging between the path and garden. What type of edging was used and how deep does it go? Thank you.
Thank you so much, Kari. I'm getting ready to make some paths in my garden so I just might try your suggestion.
I've seen mixed results with hardener/stabilizer. Recently I was involved in a project here, and learned the hard way that dg paths with stabilizers can still get mushy when wet. Before using a stabilizer or hardener, just ask the manufacturer specifically how their product performs

Use of boulders to emphasize the turn in the path. Perhaps it is also functional, i.e., to prevent erosion.

this looked like white pine needles! I would love to do this to a garden path in Montana. Would it have any effect on the natural landscape to use something like this? How long would this last, and is it quite slippery? My path has a slight grade down, and I know pine needles can be sleek. Do they

placed at the turn of the path is a hard-to-ignore interior focal point. Layered textures provide interest, even though this is a landscape with mostly foliage. Generous in its gifts, this garden beckons visitors to enter — and remain in its presence.
Some of the paths serve multiple functions.
Cunningham did some major grading to keep runoff waters from eroding the property; the hill to the left directs the water to a trench at the path. It then percolates into large pipes and drainage basins.

this path was designed and installed. It feels special, with the cut-stone edging doubling as a way to contain the planting beds on either side. The stone palette complements the brick house and creates an interesting circuit for anyone walking through this garden. Take note of the copper lighting, st
