Can you please provide me with the name and color of the subway tile. - I see that you provided information about the mosaic tile, but not the subway. »
Can a shower screen work in a shower that's 900mm wide and 1.7m long? - We live in Cape Twn, South Africa and we are renovating our townhouse. We are taking out the bath and installing a shower as the bathroom s tiny (1.7m width and 2.2 length). The shower will be from one wall to the other on the 1.7m wall. The shower rose will be at one end and the entrance at the other. I really live your designs...coming our way anytime soon..... »
Avalon Interiors I love Cape Town, have only been once but would love to come back! Sadly not anytime soon. A glass enclosure can be custom made for any size shower. Often if the shower is large enough you can do a shield without a door. I personally like frameless sliders for a more modern look. Good luck with your project!
Brie Goebel I agree. Avalon, it would be really helpful if you just updated your tag to include this information since so many people seem to be interested in it and you keep telling us all to go find it ourselves. If it were that easy to find in the chain of comments we wouldn't keep asking! Thanks!
what is the paint colour of the built in? - I have recently remodeled my bathroom and have a similar built in cabinet. Should the cabinet be painted the same colour as the trim?

Even though the tile is discountinued could I please have the name of manufacturer and name? :) - From the responses I see the tile is no longer available. I'm getting ready to put the tile in a new bathroom and I've chosen tumbled marble because I couldn't find anything which looked similar. This tile does. Even though it is discontinued, could you possibley share with me the manufacturer and name of he discontinued tile in this photograph? I can do some research on my own armed with the ansewers. Thank you in advance :) »
jujucampbell Avalon interiors I love the Petra Latina but cannot find a local distributor. If I order off ofvthe net the shipping will kill me. Ceramic Decor I also like the anatoliatile; however, I want the tile in a crema marfil mimic and they said they wouldnt be releasing this line until next year. Thank you so much for your suggestions. I'm only a few weeks away from having to order the tile so if you come up with anything else it would be greatly appreciated. If I can't find the porcelain I want I'll have to go with natural stone, which doesn't thrill me.
dorjohn Was the shower door custom are? This is our bathroom set up to a "t" and your stunning bathroom is the picture I had in my head ! You are awesome!! Wish you lived in Connecticut! Need to get the door!? Help
Avalon Interiors Sorry just seeing this comment now. Thanks so much, glad you like the space! Yes the shower door was custom. While there are units that can be purchased ready made this was made smaller than standard tub inserts as we used some of the width for the shelving. Nothing beats custom for giving you the flexibility to do whatever you want.
caroldavidson1 I love this concept as I have a very small bathroom and no storage. I need to know what the size of the shower is and also the size of the storage unit. Thank you
plumbing/cabnets - is the plumbing for the shower/bath behind the side shelving? If so how to you have acess to your plumbing are they removable? My bathroom is set up the same way and i need to replace the faux cabets i have hiding my plubing in the wall? »
Avalon Interiors Typically you install the plumbing between the wall joists and dont normally have direct access to the plumbing. I this case we needed to borrow space from an adjacent bedroom closet to accommodate shelving in the bathroom so you can in fact access the plumbing from the bedroom closet. Removing the shelving would be to destructive in this case and there is an easier option. You can always make you cabinet slide in and out for easy access as well if you do not have an adjacent space. I have never found the need to have access to the plumbing from the behind the tile. By the time there is a plumbing issue it is usually time to renovate and the wall tile is coming off anyway. But there are always ways to accomodate access if desired. I normally only do that for things that require motors such as steam units and whirlpool or air jet tubs.
Avalon Interiors This question is unrelated to the photo.
The design process doesn't work on a case by case basis per room. Suggestions of colours vary depending on what rooms they are adjacent to. Meaning that if your bathroom is open to the bedroom and you already have colours in your bedroom that you are tied to then the suggestion would be to choose one from existing. For example a soft sky blue could look wonderful with your gold and oak combination but if you dont have any blue in your bedroom then I would recommend something else unless you can commit to using the blue in your bedroom as well.
Hope that helps:)
It looks fabulous. Where can i find the specs? - I am looking to get my bathroom re-designed. I am finding interesting ideas here. Here is a good resource on different models forbathrooms »
Avalon Interiors Houzz is a great resource for ideas. Im glad that you are finding it helpful! Not sure I understand your question though. What specs are you looking for?
Avalon Interiors The product information for the vanity is on the product tag on the photo showing the vanity. Please see "Shieldmark" project for all photos relating to this bathroom.
Tile quality - Can anyone tell me whether the quality of the tile you buy at Home Depot or Lowe's is inferior to what you would buy at a more expensive tile store? I don't want to save money up front if it's going to cost me more in the long run! »
reolee Thank-you both for clarifying that there is definitely a difference in quality! I went to Big Box store A and found many broken, falling apart tiles. Big Box store B was, interestingly, a little better. In talking with my "Tileman", I found out that many times, what you buy at Big Box stores is irregular as well, with edges which aren't square, and varying degrees of thickness, making your finished product look sloppy.
I do have to say that choosing flooring, tile, patterns, coordinating it all, etc., is pretty overwhelming! The folks at the small, local tile stores were really awesome in spending a LOT of time with me and going over the 'how-to's' about installation, cost, helping me coordinate, etc. The people at the Big Box stores were also very helpful, but lacked the time I needed to get all my questions answered because there were more customers seeking answers to their questions, too.
Thanks again to you both for taking the time to be so specific!
Avalon Interiors No offence to Big Box stores but you'll always get better, more knowledgeable assistance at specialty stores. You'll also get more unique product at not necessarily more expensive pricing.
Good luck with your project. Having a great installer is actually more important than the quality of the tile. Glad the combined advice was helpful!
Shower and waterproofing - Avalon Interiors... You did a beautiful job on this shower. I love it. Us this shower waterproofed? Does the water get out of the shower? I noticed you have a narrow glass panel and you don't have a regular showerhead. Was that enough to avoid water outside the shower? I love this and would like to do it if it work for you. Great Job.... »
Avalon Interiors What you dont see in this picture is the door into the shower (visible in other pictures posted from the same project). Water does not get out as the door is closed during showers. Most of my clients prefer handheld shower heads as they are great for shaving/cleaning etc.
wendylbg in your line of business as it is a service rude doesnt come into the equation...you are providing a service that can easy be provided by any number of designers eager to bend over backwards for their clients...remember the economy is a disaster do if there is a potential client asking questions it behoove you to give them answers....maybe then they would seek you in a professional capacity....you wont make it long if you reply that an item is no longer available or that you dont know the answer....thanks lzd33
Avalon Interiors Actually Wendy I have been in business for over 23 years and been very fortunate to have worked with wonderful appreciative clients. If you click on 'more info' you'd see that there is a suggested substitute and where to buy them that I had already provided. So my rude comment still stands. Admittedly working with a designer is a luxury and that is why sites such as Houzz are great to provide inspiration to those that cannot afford to work with a designer.
Beautiful bathroom. Please,, how deep are the shelves? Is there a laundry hamper hidden below? Thank you. - Wonderful use of space. Timeless colors and design. »
Avalon Interiors Shelves are roughly 14" deep. There is no hamper below but this was custom made so if the client needed one there certainly could have been one incorporated.
lafxcas There are a number of other questions posted about this beautiful bathroom on Houzz's, including me, all awaiting a speedy response! Many thanks! Laurie Schwartz
donislaine What kind of subway tile is this? Looks soft and pretty not like the other subsay tile I've seen. Could you tell me the brand name? Thanks, Donis
Paint color - I have almost identical tile in my bathroom and am having a hard time finding a paint color I like for the walls. What color/brand paint did you use here? »
jessicagriffin I used repose gray by Sherwin Williams in a few of my rooms and it looks like it would match this well. It's a very pretty greige that can look either beige or gray depending on what's around it. If you want a darker shade, try Benjamin Moore's stone harbor.
Cubby/Storage Manufacturer? - Hi! I'd like to build a built-in cubby as seen here in my bathroom. Was this from a custom cabinetry company? Or is there a manufacturer who makes built-ins like this? »
Avalon Interiors It is a custom made cabinet. You could probably make one similar by yourself using stock cabinetry.
Designers ignore rude posts as they get paid by their appreciative clients for their services.
Sandie Kimball The initial question was not the least bit rude. I had the same question because I like the cupboard. Unfortunately, five months is a long time to wait for an answer.
What is the entire lenght of this wall and where is the plumbing? - You say that the shower is 3 feet x 5 feet, which is only a bit under a normal size bath and shower combination. Did you go into interior wall space to achieve the extra foot or so to make the cabinet/shelves? I have a bathroom that has a 6 foot tub and shower, ugly one piece thing from the 80's. Plumbing is in an 18 inch space set out from the main wall. Is the plumbing behind this wall unit? »
For sure the glass can be glazed ore etched. Your glass supplier should be able to etch. If not, he works mostly with somebody together who is able to etch the glass. But there are more possibilities. The new trend is to laser engrave the glass. Almost every motive is possible: Have a look for some examples:
Avalon Interiors It is a custom glass enclosure. We kept is clear to make the space look larger. You dont need frosted glass if there is only one person using the bathroom at a tie which is the case in a small bathroom like this.
My 46 yr old house has 2 bathrooms. One in the basement has a man made shower (new bathroom added on). I would like to replace the bath tub into a shower like this picture on the main floor. Is it a good idea? Is it not a good selling feature? »
Avalon Interiors If the shower is large with a glassed enclosure it is definitely a selling feature. I would not worry about the tub. Alot of my clients are taking them out anyways and putting in large showers.
Walker Zanger burguera- Also keep in mind that if you are selecting your products at area businesses, they can provide you with reputable contractors that they frequently do business with. For example, if you were to come into Walker Zanger and needed a tile installer, we would provide you with 3 options of contractors that we do business with on a regular basis and let you receive quotes from them and then decide. Most times, when a recommendation is given, the company giving it is not responsible if something does happen, but 99% of the time, if there has been an issue before, they are less likely to recommend them again. So that's one way to know you are getting genuine information.
sharleeg I redid an older home in area of country i didn't live in and didn't know anyone and used all Angie's List contractors and was very, very happy! Good luck!
Avalon Interiors Click on 'more info' and all the information for this picture is tagged as well as the full list of comments/answers regarding this photo.
i am tearing down walls and making two bathrooms out of one,i have 103 inches wide and 150 inches long, one main bathroom and one off master bedroom, am looking for some designs with my limited space. thankyou »
Three rows of mosaics adds just a bit of texture and visual interest to the stone field tile in this shower. (Again, you can buy the mosaic in sheets and cut it down to 3 rows.)
This would work in the bath off the south hall. A Storage area with a shower stall behind it. Toilet in the corner and pedestal sink in opposite corner. It would work.
