Portlandshojiscreen.com Would you ask an upholstery shop to make you a jacket or shirt??? I don't think so...
Consider these items:
A millwork company, cabinet maker or shoji factory (yes, there is one in the US) may be able to make Shoji, but do they have the knowledge and experience to tackle all the issues involved in make sliding doors work perfectly?
Can they make a Shoji door that will stay straight and not wrack? Look at the construction of these doors; what exactly is holding them together and what will keep them flat and square?
(hint: experience)
Are they familiar with all the problems of building these unique doors?
Are they familiar with the current hardware available that works well with Shoji, or the different types of shoji papers, or the best acrylic ricepaper substitute to use?
Do they hand pick each piece of wood for color and grain pattern? DO they even know which woods make the best shoji and which ones to avoid?
Does a millwork shop have the time to season the wood (acclimate) it as it is cut up?
Each time wood is cut (exposing a new surface) it causes the wood to react (twist, curve etc). Many times, if the wood is allowed, it will settle down after several days and a final straightening before assembly will insure it IS STRAIGHT and will stay that way.
I consider this the biggest issue: Can you talk to the person actually building them?
There are about 5 other artisan type shoji makers in the US besides myself. It's all we do and we are experts at it and have seen just about every issue. Consider getting an estimate from any of us before using an outfit that builds everything.
Portlandshojiscreen custom makes all types of Shoji and ships anywhere.
Experience makes a huge difference in how the job turns out...
Shoji are NOT built like a regular cabinet or interior door. They are functional art.
