Jay Scaletta Yes, some refer to it as natural field stone. Sandstone is also referred to as natural field stone. Sandstone will be more of a beige color, where Pennsylvania Blue Stone is a gray/blue color.
Timothy Lee landscape design This is not bluestone - we used new England irregularly shaped granite fieldstone steppers or slabs used as stepping stones. There are many choices in this category, you can get irregular bluestone steppers too they typically have a natural cleft finish which is relatively smooth, smoother then the ones pictured here and brown to blue-gray in color. They are usually thinner too, these here are 3-6" thick. Thanks for your question.
is this a side yard? - how wide is the space? what kind of shrubs did you use? i have a narrow side yard in the back ... and trying to figure out how to best landscape the space »
Timothy Lee landscape design I'm not exactly sure but probably about 25-30' wide on average. We choose a mainly new england woodland type palette of plants. Rhododendron, ferns, birch, hydrangea, viburnum, serviceberry, boxwood, ornamental grasses, coneflower, sedum, montauk daisy, catmint, caryopteris and periwinkle.

Love this and going to try for something of the same look. This is stunning and welcoming! Thank you in advance »
Timothy Lee landscape design Thank you I'm glad you like it. We didn't change the gate - they may have replicated the arch for another project and used a different gate. Good luck!
What is the color of the fence and by whom is the paint made? - We've just added quite a bit of fencing to our back and trying to decide on a color. Our house is brick and it has been quite a task to find the right color but we really like this one. Please respond. Thank you! Lib Miller »
Timothy Lee landscape design Sherwin-Williams has a great widget where you can find colors from photos you search. Go to their website and download it - its called chip it. Maybe that will help. Good luck.
Timothy Lee landscape design This was hard to find. We finally had to convert a standard fixture to low voltage primarily because we didn't want to see any conduit on the arbor. I believe its from Hadco but several lighting companies make this type of fixture. It was the size and the pendant style that was hard to find. Its called an onion style fixture. By the way that vine is completely covering the arbor now and looks amazing.
trees - What kid of trees did you pland along the fence? I am looking to plant something in a similar location, but sorry about the trunks getting too big. Thanks! »
Can these pavers be set right in the soil without using sand or gravel as a base? - I want to put large pavers in an area where I cannot get grass to grow. Can I just set these large pavers directly in the dirt or do I have to dig the area out and set the pavers in sand or pea gravel as a base? Thank you. »
Timothy Lee landscape design The material is what we call New England granite fieldstone steppers. Which are typically collected flat stone with an irregular surface that looks split. The color is typically a range of browns, tans, gray and sometime rust colors. There is another shist material quarried in the western part of Massachusetts called Goshen stone that has beautiful mica flecks and has a kind of graphic shine to it. It has more of the gun metal gray, browns and rusts in it. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for asking!
The fence behind this row of trees makes them stand out all the more. Not all fences have to be natural unstained or unpainted wood. The contrast of the dark painted fence against the bark of the trees ties in with the color of the flagstone path.
Tip: Painted fencing can need more maintenance than natural cedar. There are opaque and semi-opaque stains on the market as well.
Portals, thresholds and doorways often define a garden space. Here, the lovely curved arbor over a garden gate reads as the positive form in the side garden. It's balanced by the solid stepping stones that will lead you farther into this softly planted environment.
Nature and your landscape are great places to look for color inspiration. A green fence pulls in the color of its lush surroundings for a subtle, earthy vibe.
