Webber + Studio, Architects The addition is unpainted Hardie panel in a rainscreen application, the original house (background) has a similar rain screen siding application of Cypress boards, we recommend a bleaching oil instead of paint.
This 1,000-square-foot addition to an existing house of basically the same size is quite interesting in how it starts with a traditional residential language (gable roof, wood siding, punched openings) and then creates variation on this theme. The siding portion seems to be shifted and lifted above a glassy kitchen area; the terrace above shields the glass walls and space behind from the Austin, Texas sun.
A lot of the modern/contemporary Austin projects are additions, pointing to a trend toward preserving old buildings rather than tearing them down, and appreciatiing that which has lasted. Austin is a trailblazer in the United States with residential green building; the Austin Energy Green Building program (the first of its kind in the U.S.) is celebrating its 20th anniversary. This small addition by Weber + Studio is striking in the way the wrapping roof and small cantilever serve to shade the interiors.
