I don't know what material this fireplace is made from, but it reminds me of the Mexican black clay pottery from Oaxaca. It has such a beautiful, glossy black surface with a slight variation in color. The shape is softly organic, as if it were handmade on a potter's wheel. The organic shape feels so natural that it actually took me awhile to notice that it is set off center in the wall.
Built-in look. This fireplace is freestanding but has the look of a built-in. Add to the beauty of your unit by setting it inside a niche of its own. Tip: Tile the back wall of the recess for extra flair.

I think I could like a fp that has this finish instead of rock with nice wood mantels sticking out on both sides but offset heights with a big surrounding marble, rock, or concrete hearth
