I love this idea of a full wall of sliding glass doors. My concern is how efficient it is utility wise. Does it cost more to heat and cool the space? »
Annie Thornton I have always wondered the same thing myself. This house is in Malibu, so there isn't as much of a concern with heating/cooling as other places may have. I looked into a specific manufacturer of wall systems like this, NanaWall, to check out how this much glass will affect energy efficiency.
They have different glass options, I believe, that are Energy Star certified as wells as LEED certified. They claim that these windows may lower your energy consumption, therefore lowering your bills.
The architects of this project described it as an exploration of "the nature of fluidity and sequence in the context of space, circulation, and landscape."
What I enjoy the most is the panoramic view of the house. You can appreciate its beauty and depth from every corner.
