Catherine Weiland, Maine Coast Kitchen Design Hi there. Your research is correct -- marble is relatively porous. This means that it will stain more readily that other alternatives for sure. I agree with you, though, that it is a beautiful surface. The trick to deciding if it is for you or not is to ask yourself "do I appreciate patina?" Those that value patina feel that natural wear/tear/use over time brings beauty and authenticity (e.g., there are thousands of marble countertops in Italy that are well worn with stains). Others feel more comfortable with a surface that is pristine ten years after it is installed. It's all about personality. Keep in mind that, even if you value patina, it takes a few years to cultivate. The first stain is always painful. I know from first-hand experience (I don't have marble...I have concrete...but the problem is the same). If you stay true to your nature, you can't go wrong. Also -- check out super white granite as an alternative. It does not have the same veining as marble. Yet it has the same color scheme and also shows off the beauty of nature. Good luck!
CARMEN REYES I love this marble...and I want it in my kitchen but all people that I know say "don't do it"... and they got me scared, but I keep looking and looking for a similar peace and I can't find it...

Can someone please tell me what type of marble is being used on this backsplash? The colors in the photograph make it difficult to see if it is a carrera or a calacatta! »
Annie Thornton This, I believe, is Calacatta Marble. Check out this featured ideabook on Calacatta vs Cararra Marbles for more information and inspiration:
Sees the big picture. Running the counter material up the wall unites counter and backsplash. Green-gray cabinetry, glass and steel, and strong patterning in the stone are a timeless combination.
Marble used as a modern kitchen backsplash gets the royal treatment for an unexpected counter-to-ceiling wall application. The dark gray veining in this calacatta marble adds an abstract artful touch to the minimalist kitchen space.
