There is no stain on this wood. Three coats of urethane with a site specified sheen. We have recently used and been very happy with a milk based poly called Polywhey if you are interested in something a little less toxic.

If the desktop is custom cabinetry one could have a hole drilled for electrical cords...I would wire the plug-ins up higher...this would hide unsightly cords.
