The Orchard
http://www.fivedotdesignbuild.com

This single family home in the Greenlake neighborhood of Seattle is a modern home with a strong emphasis on sustainability. The house includes a rainwater harvesting system that supplies the toilets and laundry with water. On-site storm water treatment, native and low maintenance plants reduce the site impact of this project. This project emphasizes the relationship between site and building by creating indoor and outdoor spaces that respond to the surrounding environment and change throughout the seasons.

Fivedot Design Build Hi Ankur. To mitigate heat gain, you can paint the metal white. This will make it absorb less energy. To mitigate heat transfer to the interior, you can create a ventilated air gap between the roof metal and the interior surface. The american pavilion in Auroville is a extreme example of this strategy (called a supper roof). Of course, traditional vernacular roofing materials in hot climates are often heavy and thick to deal with the sun and sheet metal is not very thick.....

Fivedot Design Build It could but I wouldn't recommend it. It was designed for the climate of the pacific north west and is not suited in design or materials to an Indian climate.

Fivedot Design Build Hi. We used a sikkens cetol semi solid "cedar" color. Factory applied with two coats all sides.

Did the architect use a liner for the storage tanks or are they simply poured concrete? - I am currently considering a similar solutions for a client. We were looking at building custom cedar housing for IBC containers, but original sketches for the project utilized poured concrete water "silos" like the ones pictured here. I would prefer to get back to that idea. »

Fivedot Design Build For general reference.... The aprox. Cost for the total system (tanks, pumps, pipes, etc.) was about 15k. The tanks themselves were about 4k. While I personally have no problem with sand filters and chlorine (and have drunk form these kind of systems often), our local authorities here in washington state do. We are required to have two layers of particle filtration plus active UV for potable systems. non potable; all they care about is system separation and labeling.

What Houzz contributors are saying:
While the windows on this home in Seattle are not overly large, the small windows still stand out from the corner windows visible here. Small square windows can be seen on the ground level, in the foreground and on the second floor, above the canopy.
"We wanted to create a house that didn't hide its sustainable features but shows them off proudly, as design features that add to its unique and intensely local quality," says Ingram. Instead of hiding the workings of their rainwater harvesting system, the designers took the opportunity to integrate them into the design, using the concrete tanks as a wall that creates an entry court and acts as a noise barrier from the street.
This house has small cisterns in concrete that actually help define an outdoor space. These sustainable features are prominent, expressing the owner's and the architect's efforts. Note the scupper on the low roof feeding the cisterns.
