When painted as an all-over color on the walls, black or a dark shade of gray can make a huge impact. The bedroom shown here is incredibly dramatic, but not at all as harsh as you would expect. When you contrast black with lighter colors it helps the space to feel more open giving you the feeling of positive and negative space. A flat paint will also give you a softer look than a paint with sheen.
A little goes a long way ... Even a single throw pillow can be enough to wake up a neutral room. Start with something small and take a pause. Step back and see how it feels before adding more color — sometimes the smallest touch is just right.
Step 1: Commit to Respecting Each OtherSet an intention from the beginning that you will value each other's opinions and preferences, and lend equal weight to each point of view. Think about blending styles rather than blending personalities. It keeps things more civil and allows you to see more options. After all, many of us are drawn to more than one style. Look at this as a design dilemma (which it is) rather than trying to read too much into it. We all have our own likes and dislikes, and that's OK.
