Becky Shankle I try to leave a minimum of 42" between counters, 48" or more is better - especially to maneuver around open DW & oven doors. Hard to tell in the pic whether the sink on the right is in an island or peninsula. If it's an island, you can go a tad tighter with clearance on the far end. But if it's a peninsula & the passage between the DW & the end of it, definitely go larger if it's the only way in & out.
Smith & Vansant Architects PC There is a dishwasher next to the sink on the island in the foreground of the image. In the background, to the right of the cooktop and rangehood, there is an undercounter oven. There is 48" between that passage, and over 5' between the island and the left leg of the peninsula.
If to consider an open design, consider that the light in living room's ceiling to come from side window, directed through mirrors and dispersed with matte glass
