This 70’s style home in a good neighborhood was just too small for the young family that bought it and the kitchen too isolated and dated. We added a bedroom wing with a light filled toy room, removed the wall between kitchen and living to create an island kitchen and make the home “live bigger.” A potentially oppressively long hallway to get to the toy room (which we wanted to relate to the backyard) was widened by a desk nook and brightened with a skylight. Existing bedrooms were repurposed as home office and guest bedroom. Windows were added, the garage door replaced and the whole home updated. A cleverly designed urban garden enables organic food sourcing on site. And, the new covered porch helps blur the line between indoors and out by extending the time the porch is comfortable and usable.
