Maillot Homes HIckory has a Janka rating of about 1800.
The relative hardness of wood species is measured using what is called a Janka Hardness Rating. This test measures the force needed to embed a steel ball (.444 inch in diameter) to half its diameter in the piece of wood being tested, with the rating measured in pounds of force per square inch. So with this rating system, the higher the number the harder the wood.
North American Oak is around 1290 and Brazilian Cherry is the hardest with a rating of 2350.
All hardwoods will have a "lived in" look over the years and this is part of the charm. If your preference, however, is a material that is relatively insdestructible, a Brazilian Cherry or perhaps a tile may be a better option.
Maillot Homes Have a look at our Crescent Road home for an example of Brazilian Ipe (eee-pay) which is significantly harder if you are concerned about damage to the floors.
