Question on hardware - Really incredible door! brilliant really. I'm in Canada although in the Okanagan and in grape growing country winter is still a consideration.. did you design in any weather proofing? also I'm trying to locate the pivot hardware.. would you recall which brand you used? the weight must be huge.. great door! thank you for posting »
keithmacphail Great Thanks. Yes as for weather proofing I was thinking of mortising weather stripping ( of some sort) into the bottom of the door and keeping the tolerances tight.. really appreciate your quick response.. where there is a will there is a way... and probably I'll spend a few extra dollars figuring out something that works.
Traditional swinging doors rely on hinges for their movement, which eventually warps the door or wears out the hinges. Pivoting doors rest on a single shaft, reducing strain on both the door and the hardware.
Explore a pivot and slide. "This door is solid maple and was hand built onsite by a carpenter to my specification," says Mark Silva of Silva Studios Architecture. "Plugs on the edge of the door cover threaded-steel rods that run through the laminated planks of maple to hold it together, and make for a solid door that works with pivot hardware."
