motherbear The industry designates tile as for floor use....check the designation. Generally, lots of grout lines help diminish slipperiness.

outlier9 Love the red island, too, especially since the kitchen/dining is open to the living area, continuation of the "bossy" oak and predominantly red Persian rugs. Your suggestion of Amazing Gray looks similar to what I've had in mind. (Revere Pewter)? Wondering though if I should go a shade or two lighter because we have so many windows and white trim in the adjoining dining area?

Anne DeCocco No tornado in our area, thanks. Amazing gray is not a dark color. If the adjoining area has a lot of light, you could go darker. When there's a lot of light, windows and trim, I go darker, because not much will show.

Niki Papadopoulos I would suggest the mini-brick. A square shape is going to read a lot like the hex, especially at that size. If you are going to change shape I would suggest changing the scale as well to keep it interesting, if they have something larger, like a 2x4 brick that would be my recommendation, otherwise I would be afraid it might all end up looking the same, in which case I wouldn't bother changing from the hex and just keep it all consistent. Does that make sense? Good Luck!
