How much space do you have to work with?
How much storage do you need for files, books, binders, writing implements, presentation materials or office supplies?
How much open desk space do you need to spread out working materials?
What kind of computer will you be working with - a desktop with a large monitor or two, or a small laptop? Do you need a printer, scanner or wireless router someplace? Do you need a provision for a separate keyboard? How will you deal with wires?

Sometimes the best solution for a working space isn't a stand-alone desk at all, but a computer armoire, or a spare closet that's been outfitted with a built-in desk and shelves, or a built-in wall unit with lots of drawers/files and a mix of open shelves and enclosed cabinets...
...or even a large dining room table with a sideboard/credenza that contains all your files and working supplies.
