Ronique Gibson I think of flooring like another wall! So if you have the flooring a dark color, your decor options still are vast, you just need to consider the dark color as part of your palette of colors for the room.
A dark floor also grounds the floor visually, so consider lighter colors above, so the room doesn't feel like a cave.
Otherwise, your decor options should be wide and open!

If you are a minimalist, maybe just the platform around your bed would be enough of a surface to place a drink, a book, or your cell phone (which is what I use for my alarm clock now). The wall sconces eliminate the need for a table to hold the lamps.
