Cool colors such as blue, purple, green and yellow-green will pop and stand out when placed with warmer colors such as red, orange and yellow. Putting cool colors with cool colors or warm colors with warm colors will cause the colors to blend in with each other and not catch your eye.

Lightness and darkness of a color also makes a difference in which shades of other colors to use. The general rule is that with darker colors, lighter colors will stand out, and with lighter colors, darker colors will stand out.

It is important to know if you like a lot of contrast when picking out your colors. It is also good to know how you want your room to feel. This room is an example of a lot contrast and is also tying into the focal point of the fireplace.
