What kind of hardwoods and color of stain? - We are looking at cherry floors. The stains we have applied either look too red or they look dull and muddy. I want a very dark floor but my husband still wants to see the grain. Your advice would be appreciated. Thank you so much. »
betsy burnham these floors were original to the client's 1920's house, most likely red or white oak. we did a custom stain that mixed chocolate brown with a little black in order to get an espresso color that was entirely devoid of red.
i don't recommend cherry if you like this color since cherry is a very pinky red wood. the look won't be nearly as dark/rich.
rbcola I can't tell you enough how this is the struggle we're having. We both want a dark wood floor - I want the floor to show grain - I much prefer the grain pattern of walnut to oak but it needs to be dark enough to please him and light enough for it to offer suttle difference to dark wood island (espresso tones) I'm putting in kitchen. I'm going crazy.....trying to find what I want. What I'm struggling with at this point......is I can't seem to attain a dark, ("washed") walnut tone that offers me the variation I need. My builder and flooring specialists are recommending oak.....which for me is less "formal" looking and doesn't compete when it comes to grain pattern. HELP!!!! ?????

BB: I still love them. They’re classic, chic and timeless; dark floors provide fabulous contrast with white trim and wall color. So what if pet hair is more noticeable?
