Potager or traditional vegetable garden traditional-landscape

Potager or traditional vegetable garden

A vegetable patch, or potager, with apple trees and soft-fruit shrubs and herbs , can follow the design of a traditional symmetrical box-parterre, and in this way become decorative in itself instead of having to be tucked away.
The planting of vegetables , onions, tomatoes and runner-beans, is interspersed with annuals and perennials for a cottage garden feel.

WORKSHOP — Nov. 5, 2011, 10am-12pm Fruits and Berries: Planning, Pruning and CareDeep Eddy Community Garden300½ Atlanta Drive, Austin, TXCalling all green thumbs! Learn how to grow your own apples, peaches and berries at a free workshop at the Deep Eddy Community Garden. Learn about varieties which excel in the Austin area, and learn specific planting details like how large the hole for planting should be and if amendments are required. Basic pruning techniques and general fruit and berry care are also included in the workshop.

Perhaps you want to use your outdoor space to grow edibles. Grow garden veggies and herbs in a raised bed. The square-foot gardening system allows you to grow the most produce in the smallest amount of space.More about potagers
Amy Renea added this to Cream-of-the-Crop Vegetable Gardens
Group and Rotate PlantsClassic potagers had four beds with four separate crops that rotated each year. Today's gardener often wants to grow many more varieties, so hark back to the potager idea by planting in groupings — but feel free to add more than four.
J. Peterson Garden Design added this to Texas Gardener: What to Do in June
Eat your veggies. But first, plant them. Consult your local nursery or extension office for the best times to plant vegetables in your area. There is still time to plant warm-season veggies like squash as well as harvest favorites like pumpkins. Plant them in the sunniest spot in your garden — at least 6 hours of sunlight is required for best results — and consider raised beds to have deep, healthy soil for your edible garden.Read how to build your own raised bed
Bonus: 11. Plant a kitchen garden. If you have the room, consider giving up some of your lawn space for a productive potager, also known as a kitchen garden. Start small, in a raised bed with just a few plants each of your favorite things to eat.More:Grow Your Own Herbs, Fruits and VegetablesHouzz Housekeeping Guides

Thin raspberries and begin onion harvesting. Now is also the time of year to care for some of your edible plants. Prune out any canes on your raspberry plants that have fruited, as the canes are most productive on their first year of fruit production. Simply cut the fruited stems to the ground once they're done bearing for the year.Onions can also use some attention right now, or rather, a lack of it. Stop watering onions when their stems turn yellow to force them into dormancy, and push the stems over to the ground to begin their ripening process. Leave them for about 10 days, then dig them up (stems intact) and let them dry in a warm, airy location until the stems have shriveled and the skins are papery and shiny.
Marianne Lipanovich added this to Cool-Season Vegetables: How to Grow Peas
Planting and care: You will need to buy inoculated seeds or inoculate them yourself. Make sure the soil is loose and drains well. The soil should be rich in organic matter and high in potassium and phosphorus, but not as high in nitrogen, as too much of that nutrient will hinder overall production. Set up the support system for the taller varieties first, then sow seeds about an inch to 2 inches deep and an inch apart. Keep the soil moist, but don’t water too much, as the seeds can rot. Thin seedlings to 2 to 4 inches apart (set transplants out at this spacing and firm the soil around them). Take care when planting, thinning and weeding because the plants are delicate. Keep an eye out for aphids, beetles and powdery mildew. A mosaic virus is a problem in the northwestern U.S.Harvest: Shelling peas are ready to harvest when they’ve reached their full size and the pods are bright green. Edible peas are ready when the peas are just beginning to form. (You can also wait and harvest them at full maturity as you would shelling peas.) Start at the bottom of the vines. If you keep harvesting, they will keep producing. More: How to Grow Vegetables in Fall and Spring
Marianne Lipanovich added this to How to Grow Your Own Sweet Summer Crops
Determine when to start planting. Just as with cool-season crops, frost dates are important. For almost all summer edibles, sowing seeds or setting out transplants isn’t recommended until at least a week after the last expected frost.
Alison Hodgson added this to How to Cultivate a Young Gardener
This raised bed is about as simple as it gets. Go with cedar to prevent rotting.
Houzz added this to Tuteur
Tuteurs don't have to be elaborate or formal to help plants grow, but the right type of plant needs to be chosen. Factors like sun, wind and the expected size of the plant must be considered.
Prepare your space. Most herbs want full sun, but other than that, you don’t need to worry too much. Many of the more popular herbs, such as thyme and lavender, will grow in poor conditions. Some, such as mint, will grow almost anywhere. In fact, mint can be so invasive, it's best to put it in a pot raised off the ground.Even if your chosen plants are undemanding, doing some basic soil preparation such as tilling the soil and adding any amendments that your chosen plants might need will still be helpful.

2. Add them to vegetable beds. You can incorporate whole or chopped leaves into any cleared-out vegetable beds. They will mostly decompose over the winter, then in spring you can mix in whatever is left. If you don’t want to see leftover leaves in your beds, shred them first. Don’t have a shredder? A garbage can and a string trimmer will work. Use a 55-gallon garbage can. Fill it three-quarters of the way with leaves. Put the string trimmer in, turn it on and move it through the layers of leaves. Be sure to wear eye and ear protection.
