Kipnis Architecture + Planning The wood shown in the facade appears to be Ipe. Ipe is a Brazilian Hardwood that is actually 10x harder than Redwood. Ipe can be found in farmed raised regenerative forests. It is maintenance free and without any chemical additives. The natural properties of Ipe help resist termites, mold and wood rot. A properly design wall with a vapor barrier, stainless steel screws and other details would help this system stay intact.
I love the wood "siding-(not sure if that's the correct term)" on this house. Can you tell me what type of wood this is. Would this be good for Florida? Does this wood fade at all? Thank you so much! »
motherbear It's most likely a stained cedar, cypress, or redwood. These species are most rot resistant. Wood siding does need to be maintained & restained at intervals.
This house in Menlo Park, near San Francisco, is another example of relating the design to the landscape, this time by embracing it. A mature tree in the front of the house was not only preserved, but was made the focus of the U-shape plan.
Repeating bands appear in this entry garden in a slightly different way. The long, horizontal pathway gains a rhythmic vibe because each piece staggers to the left or right of center. Visually, this is exciting to view and to traverse. Ground covers planted between each band help to soften the otherwise stark installation.
The elements of a typical Southwestern garden could be custom made for a contemporary landscape. The plantings are sparse, typical of an area where rainfall is scarce. The hardscaping materials mimic the colors of the house, allowing the landscaping to feel like it is an extension of the home rather than a separate space. The single tree, with its sculptural form, is the only statement piece needed for this entry.

minimal landscaping
Like the slabs on the ground for outdoors, minimal landscaping, if any . The wood like effect can be obtained with certain teed or hardy plank ( must have wood like color(.
