lacevedo Thank you , I really appreciate the quick response. I am looking to do the same thing but as it stands, the electricity for the lights are lower so the builder said the mirror would be 33" above the counter. I think that is too low. Thoughts?
we are a construction firm in the middle east and wooden cabinetts are not common here ? - what do you use to treat the wood such that it becomes water and humidity resistant and therefore to make it more durable? »
dumasmarilyn Why did they use a different tile in the shower rather than one similar to the floor tile? Could you use a variation of the same tile as the floor but in different sizes and shapes?
albva Can you give the dimensions of the individual cabinets -- the sink base cabinets, the base drawer cabinets, and the upper drawers/cabinets.
On the upper cabinets - is the glass clear or opaque? THANK YOU! :)
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B albva, that is a request that falls into design services. I don't give those specifics out. If you are working with a cabinet shop / showroom, they should be able to do layout options for you.
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B There is a "See Products" link on the homepage of Houzz.com. Click on that and enter your request in the search tool.
Faucet and hardware finishes - We are about to order our bathroom hardware. Our shower, vanity and roman tub are brushed nickel. The counter is black, vanity cabinet, antique white with black pulls, birch colored tiles. We are considering the rest of the hardware in the room to be black. Towel racks, door knobs/hinges, frameless shower hardware, recessed light fixtures, etc. Is it ok to mix these finishes or do we need to match all hardware as stainless? This picture shows a mix? »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B With mixing finishes, it takes balance. With some clients, they may like the mixture as shown in the photo above, but for their particular house or room, it may not work as well. Each is a unique space. I would suggest being careful of too much "checkering" of black. The process is very much like putting the right combination of jewelry with the right outfit without going overboard.
Love your work! This master bash is stunning! - I am updating bathroom in stages. Adding water closet and enlarging shower to approximately 5 feet wide and 4 feet deep. Using subway tile and honed Carrara marble basketweave with an insert of this marble on the wall facing glass door...3 tiled walls with glass enclosure. Also using polished chrome. Door handles and cabinet knobs are oil rubbed bronzed. Should the hardware on shower door be oil rubbed bronze as well? Thank you! »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B The bronze on the shower door is a nice tie-in to the other bronze pieces. That is what we did in this application. See the other photos of this project book to see the shower detail.
Exactly the perfect bathroom design/colors for our home! - I see that you have said that the cabinetry is Woodharbor's "mocha". My cabinet maker can match the color in the photo, if he has a Benjamin Moore color for example. Could you please give me a "close" color to match to Benjamin Moore? " »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B What is the brand of paint you are referring to? Where do you live - part of country? Does the bath have windows facing south, east, west, north?
There are lots to things to consider to give good advice on paint color.
Cabinet hardware - glass knobs - I'm looking thru the related photos and would like to know ordering specs for the glass knobs you used on some of the other cabinetry in the house. (I'm looking at the little built-in with the tea cup on it). Thanks! »
neitz Thank you for the information link. I'm attaching a picture of our unfinished vanity that was delivered today. You will see your influence in the design. Thank you.
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B Looking great!!! I like the double set of drawers on each side. I would enjoy seeing when it's all done. Thank you for sharing.
Cabinet hardware - glass knobs - I'm looking thru the related photos and would like to know ordering specs for the glass knobs you used on some of the other cabinetry in the house. (I'm looking at the little built-in with the tea cup on it). Thanks! »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B They are the Belle Meade Sconce from Urban Electric Company. The shades were custom, made locally. The sconces have many finishes to choose from.
neitz I agree with Lyrics. I appreciate your prompt and helpful replies. We did a modified version of this and had to use 9" wide trim boards for the lights, but my sconces are 5.5" wide so that's okay. We also have our electrical in the backsplash, but I like the placement of these better. We also put an outlet in one upper drawer so that I could leave my hair dryer plugged in. (I will post a photo when it is done since we still just have the unpainted cabinets in place.)
lyrics1967 Neitz, I am glad you and Kayron mentioned the size of the sconces. That totally factors into how wide you not only want the mirror frames but how wide you NEED the mirror frames. Glad you supported Karyon's comment on that. I truly would have overlooked that detail.....until it was too late. And my scones have already been BARGAINED purchased and cannot be returned. Thanks
marble shower and countertop - Hi -- You mention a special sealer for polished marble in shower or countertop. Is that also the cae when using honed marble in shower or on countertop? Thanks! »
jococoj Thanks for you input! DIfferent question: Is it actually not practical to use honed marble in a shower? DO ytou recommend against it? We are doing a new Master bathroom so it will be used frequently.
Buechel Stone Corp Personally - I think it's fine. Sealed of course. Here's a tip i think is often not considered. One of the big things that make showers look more dirty is hard water... lime in the water. Put a good filter on the main water source coming into the house to clean that sediment from the water before it gets in.
Is it possible to put electric outlets in cabinets w/hairdryers etc.? - Is it possible to have outlets hidden in cabinets and drawers where I will keep my hairdryer, curling iron and his shaver.
Thanks, Karen »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B I know there are things that are a porcelain that would be similar. I don't have exact names and manufacturers off hand, I just know I have seen ones that would do a good job in replacing the look if needed. Are you working with a design professional? They can typically help you shop for the right materials.
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B Woodharbor is the manufacturer of this cabinet. I believe it was a 2-1/4" wide rail and stile....if remembering correctly.
Help, please! - My new bath will have double towers and sinks similar to these and counters about the same size. I've heard that side sconces give best light for putting on makeup, but afraid three sconces won't be enough light. (Most sconces take 60w max bulb.) Should I use a 2- or 3-light fixture over each mirror in ADDITION to side sconces? Or is that overkill? Room size is 10x16 with recessed shower light, a can over the toilet, and a small central chandelier...I think. If I can figure this out I can sleep at night! »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B Great comments above. I recommend sconces at approximately face level for the best and most flattering lighting. The combination of sconces and wall mount lights above the mirror would be a cluttered look on the wall. Down lighting directly over the sink will cast unsightly shadows none of us like, no matter the age. Take a careful look at the type sconce lighting you are choosing and know the different types of bulbs and wattages that would be appropriate for your size of room. Ceiling lights or recessed cans in the remainder of the room add to the overall lighting you will need.
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B I have seen one particular type of stainless steel kitchen sink that was undermounted with laminate. I have not seen a china bath sink. I would recommend you talk to your laminate fabricator. In general, you need a solid surface material to be able to mount the sink of your choice (as long as it is an undermount style sink).
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B Thank you, Shannon. They are mirrored, as the client didn't want to see inside. The extra mirror gives more light reflection to the room and adds a bit of glamour to the bath.
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B Kae, it is a tight grout joint, maybe 1/8". Sorry, I don't have the grout off hand. I suggest matching grout color to the tile so not a lot of contrast.
Floorplan size, layout - Hi Kayron,
My husband and I are trying to layout out a modest master bath without a tub but with nice size shower with bench as you describe here. Can you share the approximate dimensions of the total bath space, the length of this vanity and the space allowed for the toilet.? thanks! »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B Hello, I don't give out exact floor plans, but can help you with your bath if you need some direction for your bath. Please contact me for services if you need assistance with layouts.
Love this design! How do you feel a similar vanity and backsplash would work with wainscoting? - I would also have about 4-5" beyond the counter, similar to this photo, as well as a half wall on the left side. Do you think beadboard wainscoting would dovetail well with the backsplash? What do you think about the color of wainscoting matching the vanity and trim? This is similar to what I'm talking about: http://www.houzz.com/photos/37434/Addition-and-Remodel-traditional-bathroom-san-francisco Thanks! »
erikanc Thanks Kayron! I have a question -- I had some mirrors cut to go in the upper cabinet doors, but I can't decide if I want to put them in. What do you think? Mostly for light and so I can hold up clothes from the inside the closet to see. But because of the gap you would have to crouch down to see your face if you were right in front of it.
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B I like the mirrored upper cabinet as it gives more light reflection and also to "lighten" up the upper visual of the cabinet. Since you have mirrors over the sinks for viewing your face, do you really need to see your face when you are deciding on clothes....
It's optional/personal preference...and would look great either way.
Kayron
What is the width of trim around the sides and top of each mirror? The same as the width of the backsplash? - Trying to replicate this look with an existing 98 inch vanity. I'm concerned that I need to get the trim proportions right and not crowd the space needed for the wall sconces/shades to maintain the beautiful balanced look you created. Absolutely LOVE it! »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B That was about a 6" wide band. Yes, proportions are important. I can do long distance consulting if you need assistance.
Towers and vanity - How deep and wide are the towers. Also, how much space did you leave between the wall and sink(where towers sit) and then between each sink? »
Hardware - I keep coming back this bathroom. I have already purchased white marble, my cabinets are a bluish rubbed wood, and I have bronzed hinges ordered. My faucets are nickel, I was planning on a bronze chandelier. Your mixed metals look great but I am afraid my floor may be too white to use bronzed cabinet pulls. Can you advise. »
Vanity dimesions - Kayron,
This vanity/bathroom is absolutely gorgeous and is serving as the inspiration for our master bathroom remodel. Our vanity size has to stay around 84 inches (there is only 22 inches between the tub and the vanity currently) or a max of 90 inches. What would you think of 15 inch drawer bases on the outside with the towers on them along with two 27 inch sink bases in the center? Would that work or would the sink bases be too close together? I would love your input and suggestions. Thanks so much!

We, too, had a 4 light bar before the remodel. Our decorator had recommended a set of lights over each sink, part of that was because she thought trying to put single sconces on the side would make the mirrors for our vanity look choppy and smaller. I can tell you the light fixture you see in our picture can hold two 100 watt bulbs, but it is too bright. We have 60 watt bulbs. We did put in 4 can lights in the bathroom and actually have them on a dimmer switch. I can't really comment on shadows from overhead light as that is the only kind of light I have ever had. I can say that we have more than enough light. I would be a little worried that side sconces and a two light fixture might look a little busy, but I am definitely not a decorator. I am really pleased with our lighting. You do have an additional 18 inches between your towers to work with than we did. Let me know if I can help any other way
Could you please tell me the size of the floor tiles and the material? - Hi Kayron! I love this bathroom as an inspiration for my own master bath. I gather from previous comments that the floor tile is marble. Is it, too, the Bursa Beige? I like that it is laid on the diagonal. Can you also tell me the size of the floor tiles? Thank you! »
sheehynan I felt really stupid because of course all that information was supplied at the top of the photo. But here's another quick question. I'm going to put in a steam shower and don't believe I can use marble although I love it in this bathroom. Can you mix marble with ceramic and be successful with it?
Thank you so much!
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B That's okay! In a steam shower, ceramic or porcelain is best for performance, but it is possible to do natural stone. The steam unit has to be sized up for the absorption factor of natural stone, and there is more maintenance with natural stone. And, yes, you can be successful at mixing stone and ceramic. We used a ceramic tile on the walls of the shower and a stone mosaic floor on the shower floor. The stone mosaic ties into the rest of the bath, which features the natural stone.
lyrics1967 I'm a little confused with how you explain your sink dimensions. Under the countertop, it's 19.5" in width? But actual bowl size is 13.5 width? Thanks
Hi Kayron, just want to start by saying this bathroom is gorgeous, such a perfect job. I love the paint color in the photo and want to replicate it in my home but the Ralph Lauren 'Burlap' looks much more grey than the photos you posted. Is it just my computer or is the room color a nice soft sage/beige color? »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B Hi Cathy,
Sorry for the slow reply! To answer your question, it is more soft sage / beige in color. Always expect photography as well as computer screens to alter the colorations. Also, lighting plays a part in the color rendition. The Ralph Lauren paints are carried at Home Depot. I would suggest getting a sample to see in person.
Thanks so much for the lovely compliment.
Best regards,
Kayron Brewer, CKD

Hi Kayron, Beautiful bath... Would this work as a main bathroom? It's 5x8 with a tub. If so, would you recommend glass doors or shower curtain or both?
Thanks, Lois »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B Hi Lois,
Well, a smaller version could be done for a 5x8 bathroom. This bathroom was very long and narrow. If you have a tub, you can do glass or a shower curtain. There are generally questions that I would ask to determine if which shower protection is appropriate for a project. I consult by the hour if you have the need.
Best regards,
Kayron Brewer, CKD
cyberstu Thank you for all your replies regarding your beautiful work. I, too, was wondering about this cabinet color which works so well with the crema marfil-- very easy on the eyes in the morning & evening.
I am obsessed with this bathroom and went shopping today to see the marble countertops and floors - LOVE them. I ordered a sample of the mocha cabinetry and also love it. Here is where I'm stumped and hope you can help - please. I know that the shower tile is discontined - could you tell me the colorway that you chose and also what tile did you use for the shower floor? Do you like to keep the floor and shower the same? Thanks so much for any help! Lisa »
Lisa Oliveri Thank you so much for your reply and opinion. I'll check out Sonoma Tile Makers and Pratt & Larson. Appreciate your input!! Have a nice day.
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B Hi Lizzy, in one of the photos of this project, there was the same question and I found a very close color in Ben Moore. If you have a moment to look thru the conversations of the photos, the answer will be there. If not, I can search a little bit later.....prepping for a meeting right now.
Thanks,
Kayron
Does polished marble require the impregnating sealer and how often should this be done on vanity top and in polished marble shower? Is marble sealer toxic to persons with asthma? »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B Hello,
Yes, polished marble would need an impregnating sealer for countertop or shower (or for any application). The frequency of application of the sealer would depend on usage and cleaning of the area. It is important to use proper stone care cleaners where you have marble and not the standard grocery store shower cleaners. There are different brands of stone sealers and they usually offer a stone cleaner as well.
As for the asthma issue, I am not sure. You may want to talk to the manufacturer of whichever sealer you choose. I do know that sealers need several days to cure. During the application and curing process is when it is most noticeable. I would avoid the area or house while the sealers are curing if possible to be safe.
I always recommend really good ventilation for the space to help with any mold/mildew issues. Do not skimp on good ventilation! I mostly use Panasonic ventilation fans. FYI.
I love this bath as well and have tried to duplicate it. I love your approach with mixing metals. I ordered the same light fixture but the three-arm in oil rubbed bronze but loved a faucet fixtures and freestanding tub filler in polished nickel. I am now debating over whether to do travertine or marble on the floor. I have a dog that sleeps on my bathroom floor and I am afraid of the marble staining. What are your thoughts? »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B There is always a potential of staining with natural stone. A good quality penetrating sealer is very important....remember the saying, "you get what you pay for", so use a good sealer!
As for the dog.....does your dog just sleep on the floor? Does he/she have accidents on the floor? Because that is different. Maybe need to know more. There are some really beautiful versions of porcelains which would not stain and would not require sealing.

I LOVE this bathroom. I am wondering what your opinion is on tile on the walls? Looks like you have marble floor and countertop, porcelain shower with no tiles on the walls. Do you like tiled walls or no? Thanks so much! »
catjackabby Phillip Jefferis has amazing textured wallpaper that looks like seagrass or silk and it comes in vinyl. Check it out online- they will send you samples too!
Hi Kayron, I totally adore your bathroom style as also the powder room, its me 100% now the issue here is, I live in the UK and am presently venturing on updating a 16c thatched cottage, how on earth do I get your help advice and styling?! ; ) Lesley »
i am replicating your bathroom for my new master bath and was just wondering your opinion on mixing metals? I see you have chrome faucets with oil bronzed hardware. I love your look but keep hearing I should match everything. Should I not worry about things matching? What about bathroom accessories like towel bars and toilet paper holder? »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B The cabinet knobs were from Sun Valley Bronze. I also love Rock Mountain Hardware's finish and selection. There are other brands with similar finishes and different price ranges.
Janie Riley_Kennedy Hi Kayron, Thank you for being very specific about the metal choices. We are building and I really don't want everything to match, but I want continuity and a definite plan for choosing knobs, hardware, faucets, etc. This bath is our favorite, thank you for sharing and inspiring our new bath. All the best!
how is marble as a vanity top in terms of maintenance? love the smooth look, but concerned about water stains, with everyday use. thanks in advance... »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B Marble can etch and stain. You must seal with a penetrating sealer (high quality) to help protect it. If you are not okay with the patina developing with a natural product, then I would recommend looking at a quartz material.
I read the answers to the cabinet paint color but I am curious as to what finish was used. I love the fact that it isn't shiny. Thanks for any reponses »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B With most cabinetry manufacturers, you can choose a sheen level, ie 5% or 20%. Some cabinetry manufacturers make the paint finishes at the lower sheen level, or more matte. Check with your cabinetry supplier/manufacturer for their specifications. I highly recommend factory finishes when you are choosing paint, as site finished cabinetry will start to chip more easily and you will see chipping within a year or so.
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B The chandelier was purchased from Brocade Home - mail order. It was purchased about 4 years ago, so not sure if they still have it.
I love the overall color scheme. Could you please tell me the color of the shower tiles used? Also, what brand/style are the sink faucets? Thank you. »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B The sinks were from Marzi Studios and the faucets were from Kallista (Michael Smith Collection). Unfortunately, the shower tile has been discontinued.
katie4129 The countertop is Polished Crema Marfil Marble and the floor is Honed Bursa Beige Marble.
You can find VERY reasonably priced Bursa Beige tiles at Oracle Tile and Stone in Anaheim, CA. I recently purchased them and had them shipped to Texas, and cannot find one negative thing to say about my experience with the owner, Mustafa Cesur. They carry more than marble, so check them out at their website:

Guess what? It's totally design forward to mix metals in your finishes if you mix the right ones. Designer's tip: If you can afford to update some but not all of your dated light fixtures, faucets and cabinet pulls, know that: • Brushed nickel and chrome look great paired with iron and black finishes.• Gold and brass look great paired with an oil-rubbed-bronze finish. Mix away!
