Hi, we are going to be adding built-ins around our fireplace and have an existing mantel that extends past crown moulding on each side. I have been trying to figure out how to still have shelves all the way up without replacing the entire mantel. The flush looks better to me, but this is a great solution to have a more narrow bookcase centered on top of cabinets. Can you please tell me how deep your cabinets and shelves are? I read that the mantel is 10" deep (same as ours). Thank you for sharing your beautiful design and helping me think outside the box!

Hi Toni-
The partial sofa is actually a sectional. So, yes, there is seating not pictured and it is facing the sofa.
Thank you for your question!

Fireplace Depth - Hi Lorraine. I love your design and would like to try and duplicate it in a similar sized room, except we will be adding a fireplace. The fireplaces that I'm looking at are about 20" deep, and I'm wondering if we will be able to create the look of the recessed fireplace. Our lower cabinets are to be 24" deep. Will that be enough contrast to create this look? Or should the cabinets be built deeper? I'm not sure how to avoid the depth of the fireplace. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

Hello,
The depth of this fireplace is in a storage room behind the wall, so it does not take any depth away from the room. To create this look without a room behind the fireplace, you would need to take 20", or the depth of your fireplace, out of the room, build a false wall for the back of the bookcases to start. Unless you have an unusually deep room and need to bring the length down, I wouldn't suggest this kind of set up. The cabinets are 24" deep.
Hope that helps,

Lorraine

Pipp,
Combining 2 different finishes for base cabinets and island is very popular. A high contrast as you are describing appeals to many. Keep the countertops the same as you need some consistency.
The question of the color blue in the bookcases was answered not very long ago. I dont have that information with me right now. Maybe you can find it in past questions.
The base cabinets are standard height of 36". Because of the 2" thick top and the inset doors, the cabinets appear low. The TV is at a very comfortable viewing height.

We've all been struggling with how to handle this with our build-ins - we have exactly same layout with fireplace etc. You're beautiful design has solved all the problems and allowed me to "see" what I had been trying to communicate to our contractor and architect - I figured somehow the curtains would disguise the issue of the cabinets in front of the window but couldn't grasp it myself. So, thank you - I also love the colours and style. Amazing job!

In this room, the fire box was built directly into the wall, so when renovating, we had no choice but to build the flanking cabinets forward of the fireplace and mantle. It is more common for the wall to be built out to accommodate the depth of the box and the flanking built-ins would slightly recessed. The depth of the mantle is 10". The bookcases are slightly deeper.

Drapery rod - Hello I have a almost 14 foot window and want to hang drapes on each side to soften the room. Because some have told me due to the large window I should go with 100" on each side to give the fullness needed, but won't be able to close the drapes (100" each side isn't enough) we have a lovely city view and don't want to block it with drapes in the middle. So my question...how did you get what appears to be a very large window as well, a rod that doesn't look like it has a bracket in the middle of rod? I figure without one bracket in the middle (or even 4 total) the weight of drapes will cause rod to buckle. Thank you for your response :)

The rod is solid steel. Using that solves a lot of problems on a long window. It is very heavy. Be sure to have it proffesionally installed. Do not to use a hollow rod. That will buckel!

The TV location works very well for viewing in this space. Ideally, it would have doors to close over it as part of the built ins. TV viewing over a mantle would not work in this case. The mantle is too high, so viewing position would not be comfortable. This is a very important consideration when considering placement of a TV.

We've left an inch on all sides in a custom cherry entertainment center (see our pictures) using a 60" Pioneer Plasma and had no issues with heat. It was recessed in to leave about 1 inch from the front of TV to the front of frame. All equipment for the TV, ie cable box, dvd player, AppleTV, can all be hidden in a remote closet or closed cabinet using a remote control that will communicate through the doors without a need for direct line of sight.

Yes. The 'standard' is that any built in, such as these bookcases and mantle, is considered part of the 'trim' package and painted the same color as the door & window trim and crown molding. Of course, that rule is broken all the time with color.

The trim work in this room was all custom. I worked directly with the talented finish carpenter to create this fireplace surround. If you find something you love, give an image you like to your carpenter-be sure he is skilled in aesthetics and especially scale. I can not stress how important scale is. Hello,
Although not visible in this photo, this is a sectional sofa. The back of the sectional creates a walkway from the foyer to the back of the house.
If there is room between your dining and living areas, dress back of the sofa with a console table, 2 lamps (if there are floor outlets) and add some accessories that will compliment both rooms. You could even flank the console with extra dining chairs facing the dining room. This will tend to bring both spaces together.
Thank you for inquiring and good luck with your project.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately there is only a short wall and a small dining room area so that would not work. The living room is also long.

Yes, I agree with Chandani. Creating balance will be what makes it work. You could install shelves on both sides to the height of the window. Then on the other side use a mirror, art, collection to balance the window. You could also treat the fireplace and shelving on the left side as one unit with the mantel extended all the way across.

Do you have pictures?

As other have mentioned, it is what you put in the shelving units that can bring balance to the area. Does it feel off-balance now?

Hello,
That is a lovely, and very comfortable custom chair. I purchased that through Kravet Furniture. It is a trade only dealer, so you will need to purchase through an interior designer. The good news is, you get to choose any fabric to custom tailor it to your room.
Thank you for your question~

Hello-
These are custom, site built cabinets. You can get the same look with semi-custom, however you will not always get your ideal dimensions or paint color-that is the trade off. But, as you may notice in this room, it's OK to have space at the end of the cabinet run.
Good luck in your project!

Hello Sue,
thank you for your question. yes, there is Absolute Black Granite. I like the way that it (the stone) doesn't command attention. Busy granite would have detracted from the over all look I was going after.

Hello, and thank you for your question. The DVD player is in the cabinet below the TV. All other components are kept in a storage room located behind the fireplace wall, wires run from the cabinets, through a hole in the back, to the components in the storage room. There is an outlet behind the TV. Isn't that clever?

That sizable ottoman is from Lee Industries. It's covered in a Dash & Albert rug. That gives it great texture and durability beyond upholstery fabric.

Hello and thank you for your inquiry. This is actually a beautiful sectional. It is delicate in silhouette, lending itself very well to a small space, although it seats 5-6. The reason this worked for me is the back. With every cushion, the back of the sofa curves. It is to the trade by Guy Chaddock. If you would like to see alternative views with additional information, contact me through email at lorraine@lgvale.com.

So-your planning on duplicating this room? This will take some time to compile the list and you'll need to substitute some items. Some of these are no longer available, like the lamps and this exact rug, for instance. Would you be interested in communicating by email and we can discuss how accomplish what you need.
I'll look forward to hearing from you-lorraine@lgvale.com

In addition to built-Ins I wanted to incorporate transoms into the top on each side of the built-Ins similar to those I have over my side windows - I have the same drapery & rod arrangement with my transoms above the rod (9' ceilings). The room darken up when I added a screen porch and I am trying to put light back in there. The built in transoms would be south facing putting lots of light back into the room. Your thoughts? What Houzz contributors are saying:

Becky Harris added this to Press Pause: Styling the Television
Very calming and marshy, this choice resembles a landscape painting.
Vanessa Brunner added this to Readers' Choice: Best Living Rooms of 2011
15. The built-ins on either side of the fireplace were a big point of interest for Houzzers who bookmarked this popular photo. Users also commented on the step-up side table and the candle sconce hung next to the sofa.
Beth Woodson and Kristy Harvey added this to Dark Hardware Anchors a Light Space
This well-proportioned den is the perfect size for a cozy gathering area. Custom lighting and light colors give the room an airy feeling, while richer, warmer tones make it feel intimate. Bamboo shades have become a design staple, and a dark curtain rod in a similar tone helps blend with the curtains, creating a warm, aesthetically pleasing backdrop.
Beth Woodson and Kristy Harvey added this to Wall Art for Traditional Living Rooms Can Fit or Break the Mold
A good rule of thumb: Hang artwork 58 to 60 inches from the floor. Those dimensions are generally eye level. For continuity, place every picture in the room at the same distance from the floor.
