The dream for this family was somehow fitting a custom pool, spa, fireplace, larger patio areas, an outdoor kitchen, a large serving bar, formal gardens, and also some grass for the kids to play on all in a very small back yard! It was a challenge but all was accomplished with beautiful results. In fact, this project is featured in the 2009 Fall issue of Luxury Pools Magazine

Beautiful pool - can you tell me the plaster manufacturer and color? We are trying to decide on one now. »
Rue Group, Inc. / Kathryn Rue, Landscape Architect Sorry for the time delay in getting this information for you but it's been a few years and I had to check with the pool builder to verify the answer to your question which is as follows. The plaster was a Custom Blend based on NPTG Tahoe Blue – StoneScapes Mini. Hope that helps. Thank you for your compliment and interest in this project. K.
regulations re the need for handrails around pool where pool wall is high like this one - im putting in a pool. we're in the middle of it. i'm noticing that it looks kind of dangerous in a couple of the areas. i.e. if we are having a party and someone bumps someone that ends up falling in the pool, the fall is n't your normal highth. my water line is 31" from the top of the coping. ive looked everywhere for answers and cant find any. do i need to put in a handrail or fence around my pool in those areas? »
Rue Group, Inc. / Kathryn Rue, Landscape Architect If you are already in the build phases of your project than you should have already gone through the plan review and permitting phases with your City or County offices so code issues should have already been addressed for your particular situation. You can always ask the City or County inspector who is inspecting your project if anything is going to be required but in my experience, in Southern California, railings are not required for the conditions you are describing around a pool but that doesn't mean that you can't install one if you have personal concerns for anyone's safety or for your peace of mind.
Rue Group, Inc. / Kathryn Rue, Landscape Architect The furniture was purchased by the client so I am not aware of exactly which line these chairs are from but they resemble one of my favorite lines, OW Lee, so check out their website at www.owlee.com to see what is available and you may find something like this. OW Lee has very affordable and comfortable outdoor furniture. Enjoy! K.
Rue Group, Inc. / Kathryn Rue, Landscape Architect We discussed lighting options with this client during the design phases but in the long run they decided on having only the subtle wash of light that naturally occurs from the underwater pool light which is positioned directly across from the spa. Please let me know how your project turns out. I would be interested in the lighting option you decide on.
Rue Group, Inc. / Kathryn Rue, Landscape Architect Thank you for your inquiry. I love designing with natural stone and finding ways to pull aspects of nature into hardscape features when possible. I also look for ways to turn a pool/spa into a water feature so that investment my clients make can be enjoyed year round whether someone is in the poo/spa or not.
The waterfall effect above was achieved by stepping and staggering the different levels of natural stone from the spa's water line elevation down to the stone edge above the pool's tile line. The pump that controls the spa activates and raises the water to overflow from the spa, down the rock levels, and into the pool thus giving a natural waterfall effect. The pool/spa's plumbing system recyles the water for this consistent and constant effect as long as the pump is activated. A varible speed pump separately designated just for this waterfall feature allows for different white water and sound effects and also allows for the the heating of the spa to be by-passed when only the waterfall effect is desired.
I hope that answers your question and that you can incorporate something similiar into your project's design. Have fun in the garden! K.
Love this! - How much would a project like this range? We are brainstorming with plans for our own, but there are so many choices. I am worried about make some wrong ones. The ones that can't be repurposed. I Love everything about this look. »
Rue Group, Inc. / Kathryn Rue, Landscape Architect Thank you for your interest in this project! This type of project from beginning to end runs in the $125,000.00 Plus range. Depending on the size of your space, the type of materials you choose, and the extent of custom features incorporated into the design you could expect a low end of the range to still be around $100,000.00 as the pool and spa easily take up over half of that number.
The best way not to worry about the decisions at hand is to work with a qualified designer that can guide you through the entire process. It will be the best investment you can make. Good luck on your project.
