Sealant for Exterior Wood - What was used for sealing/weatherproofing the exterior wood (doors, windows)? What is the best sealant for natural wood? How often would this need sealing?
I live in Pennsylvania where there are fairly cold winters and fairly hot summers. »
Architects Magnus Hi devonnephi - We used a spar urethane. It is formulated for exterior wood surfaces exposed to water, sunlight and temperature changes. In San Diego we have perhaps the mildest climate in the 48 - the finish in the image is now 4 years old and is holding up very well. I expect a few more years before minor cosmetic work will be required.
Check with your local painting contractor for specific regional recommendations and to help you get a quality long-lasting finish. Best - HM
Architects Magnus Hello susanrobertson - Thanks for writing. The roof fascia is a custom fabricated, interlocking sheet metal panel over wood framing. We had quite a few details in order to get the message across to the builder.
Sorry I don't have a recommendation for a fabricator in your area. You may want to start with your architect to get the details right, then check with your builder to get a recommendation for a quality sheet metal fabricator.
The walls are finished in exterior cement plaster (stucco) that was "hard-trowelled" for a concrete look. It's a very effective and low-maintenance material.
Architects Magnus Hi Cheryl - Sorry it took so long to respond, I didn't get an email alert from your post.
The walls are covered in exterior cement plaster (stucco) with a hand-applied hard trowel smooth finish. Applying the plaster by hand creates a mottled look and our craftsman had a great eye for defining the lines we wanted.
If you are trying for this finish on your house, hire the best plasterer your budget can afford.
Here is another house where the variation on the surface gives the design a certain character. It seems to work well with wood, a material that his its own natural variations.
