What Houzz contributors are saying:

On the south side of the home is a narrow strip sandwiched between the house and the neighbor’s driveway. “This was the first garden we made,” Ockerlander says. “It used to be a strip of grass. But by the time the house remodeling was done, there wasn’t much grass left.” Making the most of the situation, she turned the swath of soil into a container vegetable garden. “But containers are expensive, so I used an inexpensive steel horse trough as a planter,” she says. The troughs are combined with painted salvaged wine barrels so she can grow a wide variety of vegetables and herbs. Much-maligned mint is grown in the gravel bed. “It grows just fine, but it keeps it under control,” Ockerlander says.
