You can do a combination of granite and marble HOWEVER only use them if they are going to compliment each other. For instance, I have used a very black granite (no gold fleck) with the Carrera marble tiles. A honed finish on the countertop will make the black granite feel less formal, if you area going for a more casual look, like the one shown. Granite is a better choice for countertops because of its durability, depending on the color or your top, I would choose backsplash tile to coordinate.

... that is exactly what was done here. It was a combination of honed Carrera marble tiles for the back splash with granite counter tops... probably stating the obvious, but just be sure to lay out all your materials together to see how the colors interact.

Thanks for the info! I am in the market for white granite with grey markings. I went to the stone yard today and was not able to find Bianco Romano granite, however, I liked a similar color, Kashmir White, which has a combination of burgundy, beige, and grey leaning more on the white side. Suzie, what kind of granite did you use for this kitchen? I am also painting my cabinets white. I am in between Decorator's White or Benjamin Moore's White Dove. I am a bit confused because it looks rather ivory online, but looks bright white when seen on other kitchen photos in Houzz. Please advise, thanks again!

Unfortunately I can't recall what the name of the granite is off hand so I can't be any help there. Everything is relative to the surroundings, so gather materials and look at them together in the setting they'll be going into and I'm sure it will be fabulous!
