  • Style: Empire NAPOLEON AND THE EMPIRE STYLE
  • After the French Revolution in 1789, a new Republic was briefly installed. By 1804, however, a brash young general by the name of Napoleon Bonaparte had literally crowned himself Emperor of France and ushered in a new flamboyant style of furniture and decorative arts. Just as fashion had been greatly impacted by the discovery of Pompeii in 1748, Napoleones conquering of Egypt in 1798 led to a mania for all things Egyptian. The Sphinx, and especially its claw feet, was seen on everything from chairs to cabinets and sideboards, as well as other symbolic animals including the swan, serpent, and griffon. Decorative elements from the Neo-Classical Louis XVI period were continued, but in a more grandiose manner and in combination with a military theme. Classical columns were frequently used as supports and ormolu (an alloy of brass and other metals meant to resemble gold) was used excessively to make furniture look glamorous. Ormolu laurel wreaths mounted in prominent positions on furniture, symbolizing victory in battle, are also frequently found on pieces from the Empire style. These military references refer to Napoleones conquests as he expanded the French Empire. Mahogany is the predominant wood used in the masculine Empire style. It is interesting to note that as the United States was in its infancy in the early 1800s and was greatly aligned with France, many new civic and bank buildings were built and furnished in the Empire style, with Greek columns and claw feet prominently featured.
