This beautiful cube of light is the main design element of this house. Everything else was created around its aesthetic. The small number of plants inside this indoor garden allow an uninterrupted view to other parts of the house.
Take an ultra-traditional approach and carve out a central courtyard within your home. Interior courtyards, or atriums, have been used for centuries. Such a treatment brings in light and nature, not to mention architectural interest and dimension. While many in-home atriums feel bright and minimal, I appreciate that this design employs a warm, Arts and Crafts feel.
A tunnel of sun piercing straight into the center of the house? Yes, please. I don't know what's cooler — looking in from the outside or looking out from the inside. Either way, this courtyard is pretty spectacular.

Improving the quality of the windows and the ground plane would go a LOOONG way towards making the atrium an asset rather than a liability, or a place of visual relief rather than an eyesore... Reducing the number of windows and doing nicer custom windows would be a really nice way to improve the space and would be a more affordable than you might think.

Not sure this is successful, but I include it as a study in bringing a piece of the outdoors inside. Seems cut off and a little uncomfortable inside there. To go inside is to get into a fishbowl on display of the whole surrounding room. Would be more successful with an interior screening element of some kind, even if only offering a corner of hiddenness.
