When you turn it on it raises up out of the counter about 8-10 inches and sucks air down and out of the home. In another home I've done, I've used a Jenn-Air range/cooktop which has a downdraft system built directly into the middle of the range itself. It's obviously a great way to keep the kitchen clean and open, but may not be quite as effective as a traditional hood up above depending on how often you use it.
