According to my old book 'The House Plant Expert' by Dr. D G Hessayon, 'Ti trees are grown by planting pieces of mature cane cut from Dracaena, Cordyline or Yucca.'
It sounds like the plant you bought is a Cordyline Terminalis Tricolor and the book says common names for C. Terminalis are Good Luck plant, Ti plant, Red Dracaena, Polynesian Ti and so on.
It says 'the species and varieties of Cordylines are confused with and sold as Dracaenas'. Apparently the differences are to do with the roots so no wonder it's confusing!
