As for your dining room... I think this should be your approach. The dining room lacks personality, so it either needs a fun patterned wallpaper with punch, or a collage of many things as shown. Again, check out the second hand stores like Circa, I don't think they all need to be important to look at.

Beige and gray are nice. But so is lavender against a yellow ocher wall. This room is elegant and classic and surprising and unique at the same time. Look for colors that complement each other on the color wheel and pick from those spectrums.
