Cathy Carr, APLD The treads and landing surface are made of a Brazilian hardwood called Ipe (pronounced Ee-pay). The wood is extremely hard - it's cannot be nailed but must be screwed down or put together with biscuit joinery - and so the stain must be specially formulated to penetrate the grain. We used a Sikkens product that doesn't have color: the color is of the natural wood. Of course, the stain makes the wood look its darkest, as if it was wet.
