"The circular seating area links a large side yard with the equally large front yard, giving both a raison d'etre.
The rounded "carpet" of crushed stone has some nice detailing, including the block edging and the flagstone path that cuts through it. Not too casual; not too formal. Definitely inviting.
The rounded area (complete with two charming turquoise Adirondack chairs and a small side table) serves the same purpose as a front porch, providing bonus seating to the two benches on the entry threshold of this traditional home. This side yard treatment is both attractive and neighbor friendly."

What are the dimensions of the entryway portico and landings. »
mamahonda I am planning a similar gravel/paver patio. Did you lay sand down before the gravel? Also, would spreading sand over the gravel and watering it down help it stay in place? Thank you!
What plants are in the design in front of the windows? - Love the landscape design, I have a similar color colonial, that we are landscaping. Would love to know the plants used in front of the house, also, what are the pavers/stones on the front porch? »
Westover Landscape Design, Inc. The plantings inlcude nepeta, ninebark, holly, euphorbia and japanese aneoneme. The stones are Pennsylvania field stone. Hope this helps! More images at www.WestoverLD.com
leniw I don't remember the name of the color, but it was a Sherwin Williams paint, the shutters are the blackest color they had and that is what we used. If I find the color card, I will post the name. Otherwise, go to their store and ask them to help you. The color was on one of the long color strips, not one of the individual color swatches.

economical way to have outdoor room -- build up with gravel and shape it, add large flagstone paths and interest until you can afford to do pavers, or mix with both textures.
I like the substantial canopy over the front stoop and how it works into the dutch colonial roof and windows. The sidelights and eyebrow window around the door are also very nice.
