I was inspired to create this piece watching children in a vacant lot find treasures on the ground and in the broken pavement. I painted with acrylic and collaged in blue, green, and clear glass smooth beads, as well as red plastic faceted beds, as well as gessoed (and there, completely archival) corrugated cardboard, subtle metallic paints, and acrylic texture mediums. The surface has tremendous textural variety as well as height. It is on a 1 3/8 deep canvas and its sides are painted a subtle gold. It is wired and ready to hang.

About the artist:

For me, art is visual language, a form of communication as important as speech. I work in oil, acrylic, watercolor, and mixed media. My work varies from abstraction to representational. My work is done plein air as well as in the studio.
My inspirations come from nature, science, feelings, and my own spiritual beliefs. Abstraction gives me a vehicle to express my wonder at the intangible mysteries of the universe. When I am inspired to create after the physical world, I prefer to work from life where possible, but also rely on previous sketches, my own photographs, and memories.
I grew up in a family with artists and drew constantly as a child. I attended the University of Maryland and earned a B.S. degree, studying design and making drawings of floor plans and building renderings. My love of drawing continued and I kept sketchbooks for decades, which eventually led to painting. I focus on drawing from within to find new ways of communicating deeper meaning through painting.
I live and work in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where I have taught private lessons. I like working with a customer to do commissioned pieces for a specific space. My work has been collected by individuals as well as corporations.
