Libbey had its beginnings in East Cambridge, Massachusetts, as the New England Glass Company which was founded in 1818 by Amos Binney, Daniel Hastings, Deming Jarves and Edmund Monroe. New England Glass was one of the leading glassworks in the country, known for its hand-made cut and engraved glass and owner of a proprietary process to produce red lead, a key ingredient in flint glass manufacture. In 1878 William L. Libbey purchased the company and renamed it the New England Glass Works, Wm. L. Libbey & Sons Proprietors. Libbey Sr. died in 1883, and in 1888, his son Edward Drummond Libbey moved the company to Toledo, Ohio for competitive reasons, and in 1892 the name was changed to The Libbey Glass Company. Michael J. Owens, who had begun his trade as a glassblower at the age of ten years, was made head of production at the new plant. In 1903 Owens invented an automatic glass blowing machine for bottle manufacture, which revolutionized the glass industry and is said to be the most important advancement in glassmaking since the development of the blowpipe some 2000 years prior.
