Marble overhang - is there any support underneath on the marble? - Sue, If possible, could you please share how the island marble is supported? I see two supports on the both end of the island, but is there anythihng, like steel rod or plywood, underneath on the marble? If so, is it only for the overhang part, or for the entire island surface? Thank you - »
Granite Grannies You need brackets or corbells to support stone overhang. You can get ones that don't show from this angle. However, you can go up to 12" out unsupported, so that might be what is going on here.
funya Thank you, Granite Grannies! My countertop guy said the same, no support up to 12" - but I was afraid, how strong can marble hold (I have Imperial Danby along with two kids, 5 & 7). I will have frameless cabinets so there is no space for corbells. I asked/begged them to give me brackets. Your timely answer helped me, thank you so much!
Island Dims - Hi, I like how you have cabinets on the side of the island where there is seating. How many inches is your overhang? What is the total width and length of the island? Thanks so much. »
If you only had room for one type of countertop, which would you recommend?` - I love how you have mixed the two, but unfortunately with my design can only introduce one type. I'm leaning towards the Calcutta Gold, but everyone has me a little nervous about putting marble as the primary (and only) counter top. »
schepke We selected a pure white quartz from Hans Stone. We looked at several white quartz materials and this particular one looked best, in our opinion, with the back splash and cabinetry. It has not been installed yet...just a few more weeks!
Hardware specifics question - Your kitchen is amazing- I want to buy similar hardware for my kitchen. You mentioned the knobs are "Aubrey" from RH- is the size 1 1/4 or 1 inch? There are several options the offer. Also, the "Bistro" pulls- are they the 4inch pulls (vs. 3 or 6)? I also noticed that the hardware is satin nickel but it appears your faucets are chrome and the pendants are also shiny- do you like the contrast of finishes? »
subeeskitchen Hi - the knobs are 1 1/4". I have different sizes of the Bistro pulls -- most are 4", but it depends on the width of your drawers. For the desk drawers I used 3" pulls, and for the false drawer in front of the island prep sink I used the largest size which works great for hanging a dish towel. Personally I like the mix of satin and shiny metal finishes throughout the kitchen. Most things are satin, but there are polished chrome accents everywhere, from the knob rings on the range, to the tea kettle and pots, etc. The sink fixtures were less expensive in polished chrome, and it's also a more durable finish vs. brushed/satin nickel. (Note: the pendants are in a satin nickel finish, but all satin/brushed finishes are a little different. Another reason to not worry about matching finishes perfectly.)
nina8 Really love the kitchen. We have a white marble top as well and it etches very easily. Do you know what treatment your's got to withstand the cooking dangers?
subeeskitchen I have plenty of etchings - just no stains. We just consider the etch spots as "patina" that's developing over time. Only way to prevent etching on marble is to have it treated with a special coating (not regular sealant). ClearstoneUSA.com claims theirs works, but I can't vouch for it.
subeeskitchen Hood and blower are "ProLine", ordered from Reno's. Hood is 48". The blower is a remote blower, located in the attic 2 floors up (and then to outside). This really cuts down on the noise; even when it's fully cranked, it's not terribly loud. (Good since kitchen is open to the family room.)
schepke I'm getting ready to order this shelf online...absolutely love the look and function. Any words of wisdom before I do? What distance do you recommend for the shelf to hang above the range as well as the distance between the shelf and hood? Lots of people have tried to talk me out of having a shelf, but the convenience is so important in my mind. Thanks!
subeeskitchen We placed the shelf so that the top is 25" above the cooktop. and 11.5" from the bottom of the hood. If you have abutting cabinets like I do, make sure the measurement between them is exact (also make sure you really trust the person installing the shelf!) Also, keep in mind that the shelf blocks some light from the hood; this doesn't bother me because I have 8 burners, so the back ones are used more for cooling/simmering/storing pots. Finally, make sure you get a good hood fan/blower. Someone on this site was very concerned about the shelf impeding hood function; I haven't had any issues, but a) I don't grill indoors, and b) my Pro-Line hood/blower can handle it. Good luck!
subeeskitchen Cabinets are pure white; walls of kitchen are Benjamin Moore "Edgecomb Grey"; subway tiles are classic white with Silverado grout; marble on island is calcutta gold
Bring in spring branches. If you have blooming branches right outside your door, by all means clip some and bring them in. Displayed in a large vase or jar, they can last for months. Even if it will be a while before flowers appear, branches with green buds or leaves can make a lovely arrangement.
A branch in blossom needs no other adornment. Blossoming branches are sculptural and fresh and colorful all on their own, and they are right at home with home styles from French country to Japanese modern.
love this countertop, would like to use in kitchen, also like cabinet color, would like to style island this way with built in cabinets with shallow shelves and overhang extending on two sides of island, love the lower island style (no columns)
