mgelfand Ikea used to (and may still) sell similar panels of fairly sheer cotton curtains in white and other colours. I'm not sure what they were called. Easy to hem, easy to hang and cheap.
Fireplace surround - I'd be interested in seeing ow the sides of the fireplace surround attach to the floor or brick at the floor on either side of the fireplace. Have any other photos? Love to know who did this construction! »

This is an idea that we are thinking of doing in our formal living room. You can extend your fireplace by adding woodwork to the ceiling and painting it the same color. This makes a great backdrop for art and would match board and batten or trim already in your space. The bottom ledge offers a nice area for decor. Many people use a candelabra in a fireplace when it's not being used, but the plate and books have a more eclectic and modern feel.
Brick with wood. Exposed brick with surrounding millwork looks timeless and can be a great way to update an older brick fireplace.
