Madson Design Hi, yes, this was custom made. It was fabricated and finished by Charles Pyle of Santa Cruz, CA. Here's his website. He does amazing work. http://charlespyle.com/
Can you tell me about the island shelves? - I LOVE the look of the spindle legs with the shelves in between...can you tell me how deep the shelves are, and are they actually bowed/curved or is that just an optical illusion?? Its a gorgeous piece! »
Madson Design Hi there, yes, the open sides of this island are curved. The depth of the shelves (at the middle where they are deepest) is about 10". The depth you require depends on what you plan on storing there. If large cookbooks, for example, then you should allow at least 10".
What are the dimensions of the island please? - I have chosen three pendants that are 8" in diameter to use over an island roughly 4x6'. Do you think this will look proportional? »
Madson Design The island dimensions: 3'-8" wide. The two ends are both curved.. the length through the center is 7'-3"; the length along the outside edge is 6'-7".
The 8" pendants you have chosen for the 4'x6' island should look proportional. The spacing you'd want would be around 1'-8" or 1'-9" on center. Good luck with your project!
Madson Design The island slab was glued up, leveled and sanded, edges and bottom varathaned
and hot mineral oil rubbed on the top working surface, five coats. There was a cupping problem because of the sealing differential between the oil and the varathane that was solved by
re-oiling and refastening the slab. This work was completed by Charles Pyle of Santa Cruz, CA.
Madson Design Hi, the island is 3'-8" wide. Because of the curve on each end, the length varies: Measured from the center, the length is 7'-3". On the sides the length is 6'-7".
bepsf That's not a single piece - it's several planks that have been joined together and shaped.
Your local craftsman can create similar for you using the specific wood species or even reclaimed wood should you prefer in the size that meets your needs.
trendyrendy My island will be 4x6' in size and I'm thinking of purchasing these exact Seagull pendants. Two questions: do you think the misted bronze finish on these lights will blend with the ORB drawer pulls I have, and (2) if I have 8' ceilings, would the rule of hanging heights still apply?(30-40 above the island surface?) Many, many thanks.
Anne DeCocco Yes, your finishes will coordinate nicely. The height rule still works. What's most important to me is that the fixtures give you good task lighting, but when you look up, you're not blinded by a bright bulb--that's why dimmers are SO useful. And pay attention to the type of bulb. I'm real happy with Philips' Endura LED bulbs. An investment, but long lasting, dimmable, low energy cost, etc. These days we've got to pay as much attention to the bulb as to the fixture!
