Lincoln Park Brick Row House

This kitchen is in one of the famous brick row houses found in various parts of the Lincoln Park neighborhood in Chicago underwent; it underwent a complete gut remodel. The client plans on staying in their home for the next 20 years and three things were important to them:
1. Opening up the space to the dining room for entertaining purposes
2. Maximizing space & storage
3. And, concrete countertops
Since the wall was not load bearing, we were able to take it out with no problem creating a large serving area and making the kitchen feel twice as large as previously. We actually gained cabinet storage space by taking the cabinets up to the ceiling and sliding a cabinet with a built-in trashcan into the wall underneath the stairwell next to the range. To maximize the countertop space along the sink and range wall, the client chose to go with a Liebherr 30” countertop depth refrigerator/freezer to maximize refrigerator cubic feet of storage and to minimize the refrigerators traditional intrusion into a room. The only other options was a Sub Zero model at about twice the cost. The dishwasher is the Bosch 800 series designed for a cabinet panel – again chosen to maximize the illusion of space and minimizing the amount of stainless steel on the one functional “cooking” and “cleaning” wall. We chose an Elkay double bowl sink and the “hands-free” Brizo Venuto kitchen faucet. The range is the GE Café “slide-in” convection double oven and the range hood is the 30” Zephy Savona.
The countertop is a pigmented 2” thick poured concrete countertop that finishes this kitchen. Photographs courtesy of Design Build 4U
