Can you tell me the cultivar of this laurel? - I'd like to know if it stays shorter or if it's pruned here to this height. Thanks!

The Laurel shown is just Prunus laurocerasus, English Laurel. It has been tightly pruned form planting to create this very compact hedge. it will need to be given a regular pruning throughout its life to acheive this effect.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

English Laurel(Prunus laurocerasus)Common laurel is another tamable low hedging plant. It's an evergreen shrub that can easily grow to 20 feet tall and wide. But here you can see how it has been controlled by judicious clipping and has formed a superb low formal hedge. USDA zones: 6 to 9Water requirement: Drought resistantLight requirement: Sun or partial shadeMature size: 25 to 30 feet tallPlanting tips: Requires feeding in poorer soils, where the leaves can become chlorotic
Another consistently green option for hedging is cherry or English laurel. The one shown in this photo has been pruned judiciously to keep it at a lower height. Otherwise, it can grow to 10 feet tall. The variety 'Otto Luyken' has shiny green leaves and creamy white fragrant flowers that appear in the spring. Cherry Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken')USDA zones: 6 to 8 Mature size: 6 to 10 feet tall and 10 to 12 feet wideLight requirement: Full sun to partial shade Water requirement: Medium
How to Lower the Risk of a Break-inIncrease visibility by trimming all bushes and hedges to 3 feet or shorter. Anything taller and you create a hiding place for criminals. Lower shrubs also increase visibility for your neighbors and pedestrian onlookers, who can report fishy activity. Interestingly, police officers at Tulane University have indicated that an ideal target for a criminal is a house surrounded by large hedges and shrubs, because they block visibility from the street and neighbors’ homes.
