Does the heat from the fireplace effect the T.V.? We have a similar set up, with a fireplace and a space above that my husband wanted to use for a T.V., but we were hesitant because of the possible effect the heat from the fireplace might have on the T.V. »
COASTROAD Hearth & Patio The practical answer is: Yes, No, Maybe.
Yes, there is a certain amount of heat generated by the fireplace, which varies widely with the type of fireplace (unvented gas fireplaces being the worst-case scenario). More than likely, the manual for your television will say somewhere "do not install near sources of heat", so if you choose to install a TV above the fireplace, it would most certainly void the warranty. I have seen the plastic face melted off of the front of a TV installed over a fireplace and a VHS tape left on the mantel that looked like a giant raisin (by the way, the TV still worked).
No, the heat should not affect the TV if it is placed above a traditionally proportioned mantel with a shelf projection of seven or eight inches, as is should in the photo above. The mantel (and distance) should effectively minimize the heat from the fireplace.
Maybe you should consider carefully the entire arrangement. Since there is no code or industry standard to govern your decision, you have to rely on empirical knowledge, that is, check with others that have the same situation and evaluate it for yourself. There are way too many options to consider in this forum.
Professionally, I do not recommend that anyone put a TV over a fireplace, but that is because I do not want to be buying anyone a new TV, just in case the finger gets pointed at me. There are other considerations, namely viewing height and seated distance away from the TV that may affect your decision (
And having said all of that, we are in the fireplace business, and I would say a little more than half of the fireplaces we have installed have TVs over the top.
Kaufman Homes, Inc. As the design/builder, We always recommend a TV to the side of a fireplace rather than over the top. It is more comfortable for your eye to look level or even down at a TV rather than up. Aesthetically, it also is more eye-pleasing to have the fireplace as a focal point and not diminished by a massive TV above it. This client as well as many others see the trend of the TV over the fireplace and choose to do it this way anyway. As far as heat goes, it is addressed with each individual TV and fireplace spec, as they are all different.
How thick is the tray ceiling and what is the clearance between tray and ceiling? What lights have been used for the tray ceiling: led or halogen? Are they dimmable?
Thank you.

EnvironmentalLights.com LED strip lights would be typically installed in this type of application. They are flexible, dimmable and cuttable to any length. Color-changing options are available too if you want to spice it up a bit!
TV. Above the mantel may be the only place to mount a television, especially when you have more windows than wall. Tasteful built-ins effectively disguise your electronics and do not disrupt the flow of your relaxing atmosphere.
