I acquired this 1947 Smith-Corona Sterling typewriter from an even older man who was having a garage sale by the ocean beach in San Francisco. I was just driving by and decided to stop in. I told him I worked with books and he insisted that I take the typewriter. I don't even know if I gave him any money for it, but if I did, it wasn't a lot.
This photocolorized image is part of a series of colorized photographs, mostly of landmark buildings and sites in Los Angeles. I developed a unique process for colorizing photographs, blending up to 5-6 images of "colored light" and creating striking effects and colors.
This high gloss metal print is signed and dated on the verso and includes a backing mount for hanging.
Designed in the Art Deco style that was popular at the time, this classic 1947 Smith-Corona Sterling portable typewriter was the state-of-the-art. The company was founded in 1903 as the L. C. Smith & Bros. Typewriter Company and merged with the Corona Typewriter Company in 1924. The company name on the back of the typewriter is: L C Smith & Corona Typewriters Inc.
