House Taylor modern-exterior

House Taylor

This home is situated in an Estate east of Pretoria near the southern slopes of the Bronberg range. The site is entered from the west with views towards the south from the first floor. Designed for a renowned sculptor with a modern vision and a hands-on approach to building and design, this home provided us with the opportunity to experiment with new material ideas and sculptural building elements.
This home also acts as a showpiece for the client’s work as there are windows and viewports positioned along the passage and in bedrooms which focus attention on sculptural pieces placed in the professionally landscaped gardens for maximum emphasis on the display of the art works. Drawing inspiration from the client’s sculptural works, the materials used for the home are bold, raw, and honest, with pigmented screed floors, wooden decking, brick walls and feature elements such as the studio west wall which is clad in rough granite off cuts. Windows have been employed as design features, from the collection of skylights in the roof slab above the studio and lounge, to the various deep box-shaped and funneled steel and concrete window boxes which focus attention to the outside world while forming sculptural elements themselves. As a home, office, working studio and display gallery this home effortlessly brings together all these functions into a modern, understated dynamic building.
