EW: This family room isn't the typical space you would imagine for a family with three kids under 5. It's the epitome of casual elegance. Where did you get the inspiration for the color palette?
MH: The painting, from the homeowner's personal collection, was the color guide for the entire house. The palette consists of pale gray, blue, pink, green and orange. Each time she looked at the painting it made her happy. The furniture was upholstered in Kravet's Smart line of high-wear fabric. The dual window seats, upholstered in the same fabric as the sofa, offer more opportunities for lounging with a good book.
EW: Why did you choose an ottoman in lieu of a coffee table?
MH: I'm a "put your feet up" kind of person, and an ottoman is much better suited for that than a coffee table. I've also found that the ottoman's tufting helps to balance the tray on top.
